Barry Town United AFC is giving fans a chance to shape the club’s future by choosing our next away kit! This year, we’re honouring our proud history with two of the four designs inspired by a true classic – the legendary ‘Tango’ shirt from our unforgettable 1999-2001 campaigns.
A Shirt Steeped in History
Back in July 1999, Barry Town stepped onto the European stage in the Champions League against Valletta of Malta, donning the original Tango shirt, produced by Errea. That summer, we played out a frustrating 0-0 draw at Jenner Park before narrowly losing 3-2 away in a striking blue-and-white variant of the kit. While our Champions League journey ended sooner than we’d hoped, that iconic shirt became a symbol of an era filled with triumphs and unforgettable moments.
The 1999-00 season saw us lift the League of Wales Cup, and though we narrowly missed out on the league title to TNS by just two points, the following season brought even greater glory. The 2000-01 campaign was a defining one, as we reclaimed the League of Wales title and lifted our fourth Welsh Cup, completing a historic league-and-cup double. That kit also saw action in the UEFA Cup qualifiers against Portuguese giants Boavista, marking another proud European adventure for the Town.
What followed was nothing short of legendary – the 2000-01 season kicked off an unprecedented period of dominance, leading to our Treble Double of league and Welsh Cup triumphs in 2000-01, 2001-02, and 2002-03. The Tango shirt symbolised one of the club’s most successful periods, worn during some of our biggest battles at home and abroad.
