Match Report: Cambrian United 3-3 Barry Town United

Barry Town United were forced to settle for a point on Friday evening following a thrilling 3-3 draw against Cambrian United at the M&P Group 3G Stadium, despite a remarkable second-half comeback from the Town.

A second-half brace from Noah Daley, alongside a Keston Davies header, saw Barry overturn a 2-1 deficit to lead 3-2, before a late Cambrian penalty ensured the points were shared.

Before kick-off, both sides observed a moment of silence in honour of those who have lost their lives in conflict, ahead of Remembrance Day.

The opening exchanges were relatively quiet, with neither side able to establish a foothold in the contest.

Cambrian enjoyed the better of the early opportunities, with George Ratcliffe called into action to comfortably claim a free-kick in the seventh minute, before Mikey George produced an important clearance to deny the hosts an opening opportunity.

The home side continued to threaten, but Ratcliffe was equal to their efforts, comfortably gathering a shot from inside the penalty area in the 18th minute.

Barry responded almost immediately through Elliott Dugan, who won possession before trying his luck from distance, only to see his effort saved by the Cambrian goalkeeper.

Noah Daley was next to try his luck for the Town, but his long-range effort failed to trouble the goalkeeper.

Cambrian came close to breaking the deadlock in the 38th minute when a delivery from the left-hand side found Eason inside the penalty area, but he fired over the crossbar from close range.

As the first half approached its conclusion, Rhys Schwank produced a curling effort from distance, forcing the Cambrian goalkeeper into a save.

Despite opportunities at both ends, the sides headed into the interval with the scoreline goalless.

Half-Time: Cambrian United 0-0 Barry Town United

The second half began in dramatic fashion, with Cambrian taking the lead just two minutes after the restart.

A short corner was worked into the Barry penalty area, where Ratcliffe produced an excellent save to tip a header onto the crossbar. The Town goalkeeper then made another stop, but the hosts eventually forced the ball over the line to open the scoring.

However, Barry’s response was almost immediate.

In the 51st minute, Ellis Williams delivered an inviting cross into the Cambrian penalty area, causing confusion amongst the home defence. Daley reacted quickest to the loose ball, turning and firing home to bring the Town level.

A lengthy VAR review followed, with the referee eventually heading to the pitchside monitor before confirming the equaliser in the 55th minute.

Despite Barry’s quick response, Cambrian regained the advantage in the 61st minute, leaving the Town with work to do once again.

Steve Jenkins’ side continued to push forward in search of another equaliser, with Sion Spence firing wide from distance shortly afterwards.

Barry made a double substitution in the 64th minute, introducing Jadyn Crosbie and Josh Bernard in place of Elliott Dugan and Ellis Williams.

Rhys Schwank was proving a constant threat down the right-hand side, and his excellent attacking play almost created an equaliser in the 67th minute. After driving into the penalty area, Schwank picked out Jack Shaw, whose effort went narrowly wide.

The Town’s persistence was rewarded just moments later.

In the 68th minute, Barry were awarded a free-kick inside the Cambrian half. Captain Mikey George delivered a dangerous ball towards the back post, where Keston Davies rose highest to send a looping header into the back of the net.

2-2, and the Town were back on level terms.

With momentum firmly behind them, Barry completed a remarkable turnaround just three minutes later.

Dan Barton delivered a corner into the Cambrian penalty area, where Daley was perfectly positioned on the goal line to head home his second of the evening, sending the Town into a 3-2 lead.

Having trailed twice, Barry had turned the contest on its head in the space of three minutes.

Daley almost completed his hat-trick in the 75th minute following another excellent delivery from Schwank, but his header drifted narrowly wide of the target.

With the Town looking to protect their advantage, the hosts were handed an opportunity to equalise in controversial circumstances.

Josh Bernard was shown a yellow card following a challenge outside the penalty area in the 82nd minute, presenting Cambrian with a free-kick in a dangerous position.

The resulting delivery caused problems inside the Barry box, and despite Dan Barton appearing to win the ball with his challenge, the referee pointed to the penalty spot.

Barton was subsequently booked, with the decision standing without an on-field VAR review.

Cambrian converted from the spot in the 84th minute to restore parity at 3-3, denying Barry what had looked set to be a memorable comeback victory.

The hosts almost completed a turnaround of their own three minutes later, but their effort drifted wide of Ratcliffe’s post.

With ten minutes of additional time indicated, both sides continued to search for a dramatic late winner.

Daley won a corner for Barry as the game entered stoppage time, but Barton’s delivery was cleared by the Cambrian defence.

The hosts continued to apply pressure in the closing stages, winning a corner in the 93rd minute before seeing a header drift wide three minutes later.

A stoppage-time injury to a Cambrian player brought a further delay to proceedings, before the hosts had one final opportunity in the 101st minute, but their cross failed to find a teammate.

The referee eventually brought an entertaining contest to a close, with both sides forced to settle for a share of the spoils.

For Barry, there were plenty of positives to take from a spirited second-half performance, particularly the attacking contributions of Daley and Schwank, alongside the determination shown to overturn a deficit twice.

However, the Town were ultimately left frustrated after surrendering their late advantage following the controversial penalty decision.
