Six goal thriller ends in heartbreak for 10-man Barry who are knocked out by Caerau Ely in round two of the FAW Welsh Cup.
Penalty shootout heroics by the visitors Joesph Baker gave his side the edge they needed to beat the Town and advance to the next round. Caerau Ely’s captain Thomas McLean scored the game-winning penalty to end Barry’s Welsh cup run earlier than expected.
Steve Jenkins made four changes following his sides 4-2 comeback victory over Newtown midweek, one noticeable change was Cymru Premier top scorer Ollie Hulbert. Teammates Elliot Richards, Robbie Willmott and Luc Rees also vacated their places in the starting eleven.
An action packed first 45 minutes at Jenner Park had both sets of fans on their feet, the visitors went close in the 17th minute when Caerau Ely’s Haben Samson’s drilled cross found Liam Bishop in the box, but his effort was direct just wide of the post.
Moments later Samuel Snaith was cautioned for a high boot on Baker with both sets of fans keen to voice their thoughts on the decision of a yellow card.
Barry’s Keenan Patten broke the deadlock for the Town, his effort in the 32nd minute gained a fortunate deflection in a sea of red and black following a Josh Beecher throw in.
Three minutes later the Town’s Callum Sainty saw red for denying a goal scoring opportunity on Bishop. The resulting penalty was converted by McLean whose strike was met by the glove of Liam Armstrong, but the power was enough for the ball to go across the line.
The visitors ramped up the pressure on 10-man Barry, Armstrong denied Hywel Davies from close-range and Beecher produced a strong block to stop the visitors from taking the lead before half time.
In the second half both sides had chances to take the lead, a Hywel Davies header was directed over the bar and Barry’s Evan Press nearly struck home the Towns second of the game but Baker made the recovery.
A big call was made by referee Ieuan Lewis in the 58th minute who issued Baker a yellow card for a foul on substitute Ieuan Owen, tempers flared around Jenner Park as a similar challenge earlier on in the match saw Sainty sent off.
Barry fought hard to restore the lead despite the one-man disadvantage, Kayne McLaggon made it 2-1 to Barry in the 69th minute, Owen’s whipped cross was well controlled by McLaggon and quickly dispatched into the bottom left corner.
The visitors Hywel Davies quickly made the game level again, Bishop’s square pass found the unmarked striker in the box, his effort was curled into the bottom right corner.
Barry super sub Owen looked to have sealed a hard-fought win with 10 minutes left to play. Patten glided past Baker and found the open Owen at the back post for an easy tap in.
Caerau Ely’s Charlie Lewis level the tie late on with a smart right footed shot, the ball trickled through the Town’s box following a corner.
