Barry Town vs Bala Town preview

By Dylan MacIsaac

The Town are back on the road this weekend, travelling to Maes Tegid to take on Bala Town. The two sides are separated only by goal difference with Barry two places ahead in sixth after both picking up 15 points from 13 games.

Morale is high around Jenner Park following a 5-0 drubbing of Aberystwyth in the Welsh cup last Saturday. A spectacular hat-trick from Ollie Hulbert complimented by a brace from Ieuan Owen ensured Barry’s name will be in the hat for tonight’s third round draw.

The same cannot be said for the hosts who have been on the wrong end of the scoreline in each of their last five outings, the latest being a 3-0 defeat to fellow Cymru Premier side Connah’s Quay in the cup. They do however have their strong start to the season to fall back on, leaving them four points clear of the bottom two. Danger man Hussein Mehasseb will look to continue an excellent personal season with an impressive six goals in 13 games putting him among the league’s top scorers.

A solid league campaign thus far for Barry was strengthened by a 79th minute equalizer from Callum Sainty to secure a 2-2 draw against third place Caernarfon Town last time out. The centre-back’s second of the season was indicative of the Town’s goalscoring threat all over the pitch, with seven players having netted multiple goals already this campaign.

The last meeting between the two was a fruitful one for the Yellows who emerged as 4-0 victors just over a month ago. Their close proximity in the table is reflective of their last seven clashes which have produced three draws and two wins apiece, although four of the last five have ended with one side taking all three points.

A big result in this ‘six-pointer’ would strengthen Barry’s place in the top half and provide them with a valuable cushion heading into the closing stages of phase one.

BTU Academy Round-Up!

U10s vs Cardiff Met

It was a great day out in the capital for our U10s, who came away victorious across all four games. Despite falling behind at times, they showed excellent character to bounce back against a strong Cardiff Met side.

Highlights of the day:

  • Goal 1: Rhodri Francis bravely stepped out from the back, beating three players before slipping in Theo James, who finished clinically to secure our first win.
  • Goal 2: Oliver Glossop picked up the ball in midfield and played Jake Thomas in behind, who fired a thunderbolt strike into the top corner from distance.

Other scorers: Xavier Saddler & Marcelo Max Keynon Reffell.

Key notes:

  • The squad are building towards the upcoming FAW National Festival.
  • New players have settled well and are now becoming an important part of the team.

U14s 3-1 Win vs Cardiff Met

The U14s bounced back strongly after last week’s result with a convincing win. Two early goals from James Pughe set the tone, and the boys dominated much of the first half, creating numerous chances. Rhys impressed in midfield while James also adapted well when asked to slot in at centre-back.

The third goal came from Seth Webb, whose effort from the left found the net. Cardiff Met grabbed a late consolation, but the result was never in doubt.

Scorers: James Pughe (2), Seth Webb

Next up: Carmarthen.

U15s 2-1 Win vs Cardiff Met

A strong first-half display saw the U15s play dominant football with great intensity off the ball. Goals from Owen Rakes and Luke Edwards gave Barry control of the match.

Cardiff Met scored late to create a nervy finish, but we defended well and saw the game out to secure an impressive win.

Scorers: Owen Rakes, Luke Edwards

U16s 3-4 Loss vs Cardiff Met

The U16s fell narrowly short in a seven-goal thriller. Despite conceding too many early on, they showed great fight in the second half and finished strongly, pushing hard until the end.

Scorers: Ollie Guthrie, Rio Fofana, Ben Dosomah

U19s 1-3 Loss vs Cardiff Met

In a fiercely contested home derby, the U19s saw an early opener ruled out for offside before Cardiff Met capitalised with two goals against the run of play. Barry fought back through Joe Case, who scored a superb goal to notch his ninth goal in eight games.

The game was tighter than the scoreline suggests, but Cardiff Met were more clinical and added a late free-kick to seal it.

Scorer: Joe Case

Match Preview – TNS

Barry Town United make the trip to Oswestry on Saturday afternoon to take on league leaders The New Saints.

Town and Saints have already met once this season with the first meeting ending as a 0–0 draw at Jenner Park at the end of August.

The Saints have seven wins from the opening 10 matches and currently hold a one point lead over second place Penybont.

Town sit in 5th on 14 points following Saturday’s 0–0 draw with Connah’s Quay Nomads at Jenner Park.

Craig Harrison has been in charge of The Saints since August 2022 in what is his second spell at the club following a spell between 2014–17.

During both spells Harrison has won six JD Cymru Premier titles and will no doubt have his eyes on a seventh this time around.

During the five years away from Park Hall Harrison had stints at Hartlepool United, Bangor City and Connah’s Quay Nomads.

Harrison has so far taken charge of 165 matches in his second stint and has picked up 125 wins and have lost just 26 matches.

This will be Town’s first trip to Park Hall since September 2024 where the Saints ran out 4–0 winners, Town will be hoping for an improvement this time around.

Kick off is at 14:30 on Saturday, we hope to see as many of you in Oswestry as possible!
